Classical
Chinese Poetry
'San
Zi Jing' (P1-P3)
The
Chinese has a wealth of classical literature, including poetry and
Chinese classics texts (San Zi Jing, Si Shu, Wu Jing). The Chinese
classics are a distillation of the essentials of Confucian
teachings, expressed in a way suitable for teaching young children. Mr.
George Yeo, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, in an
address at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said “ For centuries,
Chinese children, before they could read or write, were taught to
recite the San Zi Jing through which the Confucianist idea of society
being one big family is programmed into young minds. The
three-character phrases are like strands of DNA which are passed on
from generation to generation.”.
We introduce San Zi Jing, as
our young readers can memorize, chant and read it effortlessly.
Although appreciation and understanding are not the key focus here, the
children will enjoy the stories and relate to the characters in the
stories, in themselves, or in others. They will recognize the different
virtues that help to anchor them in the Chinese culture, history and
traditions. Our children will take them to heart and the good values
will become beneficial to them for life. Learning Chinese can be fun
and relevant!
'San
Guo Yan Yi' (Sec 1-4)
The
Romance of Three Kingdoms (San Guo Yan Yi), Outlaws of the Marsh (Shui
Hu Zhuan), Journey to the West (Xi You Ji) and Dream of Red Mansions
(Hong Lou Meng) are four of the most popular historical novels of
China. Of them, the Romance of Three Kingdoms (San Guo Yan Yi) is the
best known and best loved of the ancient Chinese novels which have come
down through the ages. It transforms history into different epics with
unforgettable examples of martial and civic virtues, personal
fidelity and political treachery.
Plain
language is used in this programme to
help students understand the Chinese culture better.
Fascinating tales of key events at the end of the Han Dynasty (206
B.C.-A.D. 220) are used to illustrate loyalty, treachery,
triumph
and defeat. One chapter describes the intricate and tense struggles for
the throne among three powerful political forces: Liu Bei, Cao Cao and
Sun Quan. Children can learn from these events and apply them
to
their daily lives at home and in school.
